From Confederate Veteran, vol. XII (1904), page 287: One of the few outdoor "candid" images of Mosby's Men:

Left to Right: John Henry Alexander (Pvt. Co A), "Otley" (first name unknown), Ab Settle (Pvt., Co B), Cab Maddux (Pvt., Co A),
"James" (possibly J Wright James?, QM), Clem Edmonds (Pvt. Co.B), Daniel Dulany DeButts (son of Richard Earle DeButts, Pvt, Co A)

"Otley" might be a member of the Otley family that lived in the Purcellville / Hamiton area. He's not listed on the roster and may have just been a friend rather than a member of Mosby's command. He's wearing a civilian sack coat, wasitcoat and trowsers, and might have been a civilian, although Cab Maddux, a documented Mosby Ranger, is also weraing civilian clothing. The coat worn by "James" could be a civilian type overcoat or duster, or an unbuttoned miiltary style frock with fairly long skirts. It's hard to make out from the photo, but he appears to be wearing some kind of overshirt with decorated placket, tucked into his trowsers.

Alexander, Settle, Edmonds and DeButts all appear to be wearing the 'Type III" Richmond Depot jacket - a nine button six-piece shell without epaulettes. Alexander, Settle and Edmonds wear their jackets open, over a waistcoat, probably civilian. We haven't seen any documentation of DeButts actually being a member of the command or having served in the Confederate army. However, he is clearly wearing a military issue jacket. He would have been 18 at the war's end, and therefore just of age, but a number of underage young men fought with Mosby, including Cab Maddux (pictured). The fact that his father was a member of the command and that he's pictured with other Rangers in a uniform suggests that he was also a Mosby Ranger.

Alexander, Settle and Edmond's trowsers might be military issue or they might be civilian. We cannot tell from the photograph. DeButts is wearing darker, civilian-style trowsers. Settle is the only one wearing a military issue kepi. Maddux, Edmonds and DeButts are wearing some variation of the "Mosby" type flat crowned, narrow brimmed hat, with DeButts turning one side up, a'la Mosby and the others wearing theirs like normal civilian hats, but at a jaunty angle. Alexander and James are wearing some sort of civlian slouch, with Alexander turning his front brim up and/or tilting his hat on the back of his head, farmer-style. Otley's light colored slouch is folded almost into a tricorn in the front.

Note that NONE of the men have their trowsers tucked into boots and are either wearing their boots under their trowsers or wearing shoes.

This picture probably represents the right ratio of military issue jackets to civilian clothing for an overall group impression.
