Mosby's
Rangers:
Officially
designated the Forty Third Battalion of Virginia
Cavalry, Mosby's Rangers was a unit of partisan
rangers operating in Northern Virginia from the
winter of early 1863 until the end of the War
Between the States. During that twenty eight month
span, the Rangers became the most effective and
feared partisan command in the
Confederacy.
History
of the command:
More
to come, but meanwhile, read our thumbnail
history.
Who
were the original
nine
men detailed to Mosby by Stuart for the first two
weeks of 1863 and the original
15
in the longer term detail assigned on January
18?
Regimental
Rosters:
Regimental
rosters
for Companies A-H and the artillery company are now
online, as is an alphabetical listing of men of the
command whose unit is unknown. (The latter includes
those who were in the Command before it was
formally constituted as the 43rd Battalion and
individuals companies were established.) A full
alphabetical listing, cross referenced by unit
where known, will be added later.
Chronology
of Raids and Engagements:
This
section contains a chronological
list (not complete as of July 2001) of the key
events in the history of the
Command,
broken out by year. The eventual plan is to produce
individual pages on each of the major raids. So
far, this has been begun for the 1863 events only,
but stay tuned!

Uniforms,
Arms and Accoutrements of Mosby's Rangers:
By
analyzing the 93 wartime images of men of the
Command printed in James J. Williamson's 1896 book
"Mosby's Rangers", we've been able to draw some
interesting conclusions. This work is in draft
form, pending review by a number of experts.
However, the preliminary
conclusions
are now online.
The Men
of Mosby's Command:
Individual
Pages:
Our
eventual aim is to do a one-page mini-website for
every man in the command, plus key civilian
supporters.
Only
a few pages have been done so far, but many more
are in the works. To read what we have so far, go
to the Individual
Rangers
section.
Descendants
and researchers have been sending us materials and
we are working to get as much of this material
