Cavalry Resources:

The following are particularly useful sites for learning more about cavalry, both during the Civil War and in general.

The Military Horse Website:
Message boards, articles on cavalry horsemanship thorugh the ages, and on cavalry tack, including a substantial section on McClellan saddles - how to tell the diference between the 1859 odel used in the War and later models.

The Cavalry Forum:
Discussion board for reenactors / living historians and others studying cavalry history, tactics, and methodology, covering all time periods but the overwhelming focus is on Civil War

US Cavalry Association:
Located in Ft. Riley Kansas, commemorates American cavalry of all time periods and on both sides in the CW.

9th Virginia Regiment of Cavalry Living History Assn based in Oregon. Lots of useful information on cavalry training and drill, including materials recently added on the 19th century military seat. featuring illustrations from Poinsett's 1841 Cavalry Manual, the old US Army Cavalry Manual most commonly used by Confederate Cavalry (KC notes: I have an 1856 Philadelphia reprint reputedly owned by a Virginia cavalry lieutenant) Also good site for link to the North West Cavalry Assn's safety guidelines.

2nd US Cavalry Reenactor Unit:
Site also links into the main USV cavalry battalion page. Click HERE for their very uselful Info Page on cavalry reenacting (Also more info on cavalry manuals here - they offer an easy to read manual ofr modern reenactors based in Previtt's)

The Critter Company:
Georgia-based authentic / campaigner cavalry group. In fact, they don't have much up on their site yet, but the promised sections not yet uploaded should be good when they're up. This group is worth learning from.

CivilWarCavalry.com
General informatoin site by Eric Witttenburg, author of an excellent book entitled Gettysburg's Forgotten Cavalry Campaigns. His main focus is on Eastern Theatre Union Cavalry.

Brandy Station Foundation:
Non Profit historical foundation commemorating the largest cavalry engagement of the War.

Yahoo Clubs -- Horse Cavalry Discussion Group
Cavalry reenactors / students of all eras belong to this one, including English Civil War and Revolutionary War. Not much activity for a while (?) but good links page.

The US Cavalry School
General instruction, workshops, etc. focus on Indian Wars period.
