Pvt. James J. Rumsey, Artillery Company

b. 1838, Culpeper County
joined Mosby ca. August 1863 in Culpeper. Served in the artillery company under Capt. Peter Franklin* until ca. April 9-14, 1865. Applied for pension in 1910, application endorsed by Culpeper's local A.P. Hill UCV Camp and by fellow member of Mosby's Artillery company, Burgess Wellington Hitt. Another member of the company, Wallace Hitt is also given as a reference.

Pvt. Rumsey does not appear on any of the rosters and had not yet been identified by researchers. Thanks to descendant William Rumsey, we have been able to add another Mosby Ranger to the list. Mr. Rumsey sent us a scan of his ancestor's Confederate pension application, which clearly states his membership in the 43rd Battalion. Until now, his membership in the battalion was not known to Mosby researchers. The fact that the application was endorsed by a previously documented member of the artillery company is strong documentation.
