Thomas
Beaty (also listed as Batey) is listed on the
January-February 1863 muster rolls of the 1st
Virginia Cavalry as "detailed to Cpt. Mosby".
Although
he does not appear in the list of the
original
fifteen
men detailed from the 1st VA to Mosby on January
18 which James J. WIlliamson provides in his
1896 book, Mosby researchers Hugh
Keen and Horace Mewborn
have
identified him as one of these men. In addition
to the First Virginia records which show him as
detailed to Mosby, he appears on Federal records
as being one of three members of the 1st
Virginia captured on January 27 in
Middleburg.
On
this date, Mosby's memoirs note that Fount
Beattie and two other men from the detachment
were captured.
He
was paroled the following month and returned to
the 1st Virginia, and in Janaury - February of
the following year was detailed to the teamsters
at brigade headquarters.
He
remained with the 1st Va for the duration of the
War and was paroled at Winchester ten days after
Appomattox. He is listed as being age 24, 5'7"
tall, dark complexion, black hair, black eyes
and as being from Middletown. After the War
(1870) he lived in Front Royal.
He
died on December 20, 1916 and is buried in the
Reliance Methodist Church Cemetery in Warren
County.
