Pvt. Francis M. "Frank" Angelo, Co. C.

b. ca.1841, Alexandria, VA
m. ??
d. October 15, 1928, Alexandria, VA

Frank Angelo, who also had the nickname of "Mocking Bird" enlisted on January 1, 1864 for the War, enrolled by William Chapman in Fauquier County.

Although no mention is made of that fact in his thumbnail biography in the Keen and Mewborn regimental history, it is probable that he is the same person as appears on the muster roll of Scott's 24th Battalion of Virginia Partisan Rangers. He is listed as a member of Company A, which was recruited in Richmond. Angelo was not a common surname in Virginia at the time, and at least one other member of Scott's Partisan Battalion joined Mosby when this command was disbanded - George Henry Whitescarver, who appears on the 24ths muster rolls as William Henry Whitescarver or Wisecarver.

Pvt. Angelo appears on the January -February 1864 muster roll for Mosby's command and also on the 4th quarter clothing receipt roll for 1864. He is documented as having been involved in the September 3, 1864 fight at Gold's Farm near Berryville, although undoubtedly was involved in several other raids (Mosby did not take roll.)

He was captured on November 24, 1864 near Millwood and escaped that night from the Martinsburg, WV jail. He was paroled on April 20 and again on April 21 at Winchester.

At the time of his parole he was described as being age 24, 5'5" tall, dark complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes.

After the war he variously lived in Washington DC and Alexandria. In Culpeper, he was commander of the A.P. Hill Camp of the UCV in 1922, but it is not clear whether he was living in Culpeper at this time. By 1909, he is listed as living in Washington and working for the US Department of Agriculture.

He attended a number of reunions of Mosby's command: the 1897 reunion in Baltimrore, the 1905 reunion in Fredericksburg the 1920 reunion in Culpeper and the last reunion, in 1925 in Front Royal.

He died October 15, 1928 in Alexandria and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
