March 17, 1863: YOU Were There!
It's shortly after noon on St. Patrick's Day. The soldiers of the First Vermont Cavalry, on outpost duty at Herndon, are lounging around the station, waiting for their replacements to arrive from the main cavalry camp at Dranesville. A column of riders appears in the distance. "Hurrah! We're off duty! We can go back to camp now. Wait a minute? Are they OURS?"

"Charge 'em boys!" shouts John Singleton Mosby and the raiders swoop on on the unsuspecting Federal troopers. In short order, 25 Vermonters have been captured. And the Gray Ghost has written another chapter in the history of the Civil War, and in the history of Herndon.
