February 2002:

Immortal 600 Event:
February 22-24, Ft. Pulaski, Savannah, GA
Jeff Smith to portray
1st Lt. William Lyle Hunter, one of Mosby's key lieutenants who became one of the famous Prisoners of War known as the "Immortal 600"

March:

March 25: Jeff Smith to give presentation, in first person, on Col. Mosby's activities in Fairfax County and his railway raids at the Fairfax Station Railway Museum

March 30 -- 165th birthday of Pauline Clarke Mosby. Commemoration planned

April:

April 21, 2002 -- 137th anniversary of Col. Mosby Disbanding his command at Salem (Now Marshall) Va. Commemoration planned.

May:

May 13, 2002 -- 126th anniversary of the death of Pauline Clarke Mosby. She was only 39 years old. Flowers for gravesite planned.

May 30, 2002 -- 86th anniversary of the death of Col. Mosby at age 82. Flowers and flag for gravesite planned)

June, 2002:

June 1-2 -- 2nd Annual Blenheim event, Fairfax City. Event once again to feature a mini-version of the reenactment of the famous Fairfax Raid and capture of General Stoughton.

June 7, 8, 9: Reenactment of Stuart's Ride Around McClellan (stay tuned for details)

June 10: 139th anniversary of the formation of the 43rd Battalion, Rector's Cross Roads. Commemoration planned as a prelude to bigger 2003 140th anniversary event.

August, 2002:

Working date for another Mosby's Rangers event at Sky Meadows State Park

September, 2002:

140th Anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Antietam / Sharpsburg. Jeff Smith to portray acting Lt. John Mosby, a scout for General J.E.B. Stuart.

September, 2002 (date TBA) - Annual Mosby Bus Tour, sponsored by Stuart Mosby Society, led by Don Hakenson

October, 2002:

First weekend: "The Heritage of the Horse" -- Annual Snickersville Turnpike Association cavalry ride, to aid historic preservation. Stay tuned for details. Worthwhile event organized to raise money to preserve some of the most important unspoiled landscape in America, in the core of "Mosby's Confederacy"

December 2002:

(First Saturday) Third annual Blue and Gray Ball, to benefit the Mosby Museum. See John Singleton Mosby Foundation's website for details.

December 6, 2002: Col. John Singleton Mosby's 169th birthday. Commemorations planned by both the Stuart-Mosby Society and the J.S. Mosby Camp, SCV

Dates to be announced

"An Evening with Col. Mosby and Kitty Kitchen Hanna" -- first person living history presentation for the Herndon Public Library as a follow up to the Herndon raid event, featuring Jeff Smith as Col. Mosby and Kathryn Coombs as Mrs. Hanna.

We are exploring holding an event in effect "reenacting" the reunions of Mosby's men held from 1895-1928. The primary purpose would be for descendants, historians and living historians to exchange stories. Watch this space for details.

February 19 -- Annual George Washington's Birthday Parade, Alexandria, Virginia. Jeff Smith, as Mosby, marches with the Robert E. Lee Camp, SCV

February 16 --Stuart Mosby Society annual service of commemoration of Gen. Stuart's Birthday, at the grave of General Stuart, in Hollywood Cemetery. Jeff Smith, as Col. Mosby, serves as honor guard (photographs forthcoming)

2001:

December 2001:
December 1: Annual Blue and Gray Ball in honor of Col. Mosby's birthday, held by the Mosby Museum. Jeff portrayed Col. Mosby and our friends in the Black Horse Troop (Co H, 4th VA Cavalry) made a dramatic entrance on horseback by torchlight.

December 8: Attended Stuart Mosby Society meeting in commemoration of Col. Mosby's Birthday on December 6

December 14: Jeff attends R.E. Lee Camp, SCV annual Christmas Party in character as Col. Mosby

October 2001:
Friends from the "Historic Mosby's Rangers" living history group in Washington State, led by Brian Buntain, pay their annual visit to Virginia. The JSMLHA organizes for them a mini-event at Sky Meadows State Park wherein they and Jeff Smith portrayed Mosby's men returning from a raid to Mt Bleak, a Mosby "safe house" where Mrs. Settle and her friends had lunch prepared for them. Afterwards, participants attend the dedication of the VDOT highway marker commemorating the death of Ranger James "Big Yankee" Ames. (photos forthcoming)

September 2001:
Dedication of the VDOT highway marker for "Mosby's Rock", near Frying Pan, organized by Richard Crouch and the Mosby's Rock Association. Jeff Smith did the honors as Colonel Mosby and Kathryn Coombs provided narration as Laura Ratcliffe. Colonel Mosby's great-grandniece, Lucy Russell, represented the Mosby family. August 2001:
Jeff portrays PRIVATE John Singleton Mosby, Co L, 1st Virginia Cavalry (Washington Mounted Rifles) at 140th anniversary reenactment of the battle of First Manassas

Herndon Historical Society anniversary ceremony. Jeff, as Colonel Mosby and Kathryn, as Kitty Kitchen Hanna, give a brief presentation to the society's meeting marking their anniversary also marked by postal first day covers.

July 2001:
Jeff portrays Col. Mosby and Kathryn portrays Pauline Mosby at annual picnic of the John Singleton Mosby Camp, SCV, in Front Royal.

July 4 Weekend: Battle of Gettysburg Reenactment. Jeff and Kathryn run a fundraising booth at the reenactment to aid the J.S. Mosby Foundation / Mosby Museum project.

June 2001:
June 9 - Durin the day, Jeff portrayed Col. Mosby and gave a talk in first person at the rededication of the Mt. Zion Church, Aldie Virginia, following extensive restoration. Restoration of the church was done with Federal ISTEA funds, following an active effort by the Mosby Heritage Area Assn. Our friend Bob Szabo the period wetplate photographer has done some beautiful ambrotypes of the church. In the evening, we attended the Mosby Museum (J.S. Mosby Foundation) fundraising Barn Dance at the Inn at Kelly's Ford.

May 2001:
May 5th -- First annual Blenheim event and mini-reenactment of capture of General Stoughton, organized by Fairfax City Parks and Recreation and Co, D, 17th Virginia Infantry. General Stoughton portrayed by Steve Wolfsberger of the 17th Virginia. (photos forthcoming)

May 19th -- Jeff and Kathryn assisted with the John Singleton Mosby Foundation (Warrenton Mosby House Museum) booth at the annual Warrenton Festival. Jeff portrayed Col. Mosby and posed for photographs with tourists in exchange for a donation to the museum.

April 2001:
Jeff gives presentation to school history classesin Prince William County.

(January 18, 2003: 140th anniversary of the assignment of the "original fifteen" detailed to Mosby. )

(March 9, 2003: 140th anniversary of the kidnapping of General Stoughton (Fairfax Raid) -- We plan to stage a major reenactment of this event - details to be announced

(June 10, 2003: 140th anniversary of the official establishment of the 43rd Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, at Rector's Cross Roads (Atoka)

(April 21, 2005: 140th anniversary of the disbandment of the battalion at Salem (Marshall)
