43rd Battalion Descendants:

Our intention with this website is to provide a forum through which descendants and researchers of the individual men in Mosby's command can exchange information. Any information you would be willing to share, including copies of photographs, pictures of any uniforms, accoutrements or weapons that have remained in the family, genealogical data, etc., would be hugely helpful not only to fellow "Rangers" descendants but also to all those who venerate the memory of this very special command.

Message Boards:

Soon, we will be adding a message board facility to enable you to post your information and queries. In the interim, please send information care of the webmaster, Kathryn Coombs (ms4tune@aol.com) and we will ensure that it is posted manually.

Web Pages on Individual Rangers:

Visit the Mosby's Rangers Section, where, once our database is finished, we will shortly be creating an individual web site for each of the men in the command.

Mosbys Rangers Descendants & Researchers on the Web:

This section provides links to genealogy websites, charts, queries, articles and other information posted on the Internet by 43rd Battalion descendants and researchers. (Be sure to check out the Fount Beattie descendants website, which is excellent!)

Genealogy Links and Tools:

Links to genealogy sites that might be useful to those researching individual men of the command

Other Resources:

A number of Mosby's Rangers descendants attended the October, 2000 Mosby Heritage Area Foundation conference on Civil War Command, which also featured a bus tour of key sites in the history of the 43rd Battalion.

At this event, we were privileged to meet "Doc" McAtee, grandson of Pvt William Armstead McAtee. Although Doc never knew his grandfather (who died in 1903), as a small child he was befriended by 3rd Lt. John Russell, Colonel Mosby's chief scout, who used to sit him on his knee and tell him war stories and buy him candy. Russell lived until 1932.

"Doc" has written a series of three books on Virginia Civil War ghost stories, legends and anecdotes, which are VERY much worth reading. They can be ordered directly from him. (will be posting ordering information soon)

Attention Descendants!

"BioCav" Project of the US Cavalry Association:
Descendants of all American cavalrymen in all time periods (and Civil War cavalrymen of both sides!) are encouraged to fill out a biography form on their ancestor for the US Cavalry Assocation's database project.
